Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Gary M. Blau, Ph.D., who is involved in wide variety of programs designed to improve the lives of children and families and has been working to raise awareness of Children’s Mental Health.

In my interview with Dr. Blau, I asked about the treatments that are available for children with mental health challenges.

There are numerous evidence based treatments, Dr. Blau said.  There is hope and children do recover.   With grant money through SAMSA and other programs and coordinated networks of care, such as the National Traumatic Stress Network, support services provide children with helpful and necessary services.  Dr. Blau states that varying forms of specific kinds of treatments such as trauma focused cognitive behavior therapy, which is a short term treatment focused on becoming aware of thoughts and traumatic event might effect reactions and behavior are highly effective.  Other promising treatments include SPARCS for teenagers  and ARC.  Dr. Blau emphasized the importance of becoming aware of a child’s mental health challenges, early intervention, addressing problems, finding and effective treatment approach.

Can What You Eat Impact How You Think and Feel?

mixed fruitPeople generally understand that eating healthy is beneficial to physical health.  Healthy eating can lower the risk of developing diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.

According to Roger Walsh in the October 2011 issue of The American Psychologist, there is now a sizable body of evidence indicating the importance of nutrition for mental health. A review of over 160 studies suggested that diet and nutrition can impact the mental health of nations (Gomez-Pinella, 2008).

How Your Lifestyle Impacts Your Mental Health

cyclistUnhealthy lifestyles contribute to multiple psychopathologies, according to an article in the October issue of The American Psychologist.

Cardiovascular disorders, obesity, diabetes and cancer are strongly determined by lifestyle.  Smoking, physical activity, alcohol intake and diet have a major impact on physical health and the development of disease.  Lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise and overeating are increasing to such an extent that the World Health Organization has warned that “globesity”—a global epidemic of overweight and obesity—is taking over the world.
